i don't discuss politics

but these words, spoken by john mccain last night, scare the shit out of me:

"I have a 25 year record pro-life record in the Congress, in the Senate, and as President of the United States I will be a pro-life president, and this presidency will have pro-life policies. That's my commitment. That's my commitment to you."

while this doesn't directly affect me (unlike the very real possibility of increased taxes, should obama be elected), it bothers me to no end. i'll never understand the idea of personal decisions being taken out of the hands of individuals. no, i don't think i could ever have an abortion, but i'm just not okay with the idea of that choice being made for me.

okay, that's all i have to say about that.

  1. I simply have a problem having a president who was born before television existed.

    That's really really really old.

  2. Weemo just killed me.

As much as I love Obama (and I do enjoy discussing politics, I just don't have anybody to talk to), I don't like how he said that a marriage is between a man and a woman.

But I do realize that unless I run for president (which I don't qualify for), I'll never find a perfect candidate who agrees with me on everything.

  3. My very British, old-fashioned, conservative in the true sense of the word dad's comment back during the 2004 elections was "I would vote for a cocker spaniel if it supported the right wing, but I would never vote for Bush because I just don't think it's his place to talk about abortion." I hope it's an issue that never directly affects me, but that doesn't mean I get to force my moral beliefs on someone else.

  4. I generally do not talk politics, either, but I could not agree with you more. That terrifies the crap out of me.

  5. I don't really talk politics either, but that's mostly because I feel inadequately informed to discuss the topic in an educated fashion.

I agree with your comment that this shit is scary.

  7. I enjoy discussing politics, but try to avoid it with people I like just in case they think something different from me :)

McCain has said some frightening things and that is just one of many, IMO. I will never understand how Republicanism has morphed from wanting less government intrusion into a private citizen's affairs into being up in people's uteruses, bedrooms, etc.
