shots shots shots shots shots shots EVERYBODY

the bean, like her mother, absolutely hates needles.   i'd suppose that's a pretty common sentiment, because shots aren't fun.  she hadn't had to have any since she started kindergarten, and we both remember very clearly when the doctor said that she wouldn't need any more again until she turned 11.

you know where this is going.

also like her mother, she adores her birthday.  total birthday princesses, we are.  i know i'm a grown ass adult and probably should be way past that, but we all know how much i love to celebrate birthdays.  not even just my own, but for everyone in my family.  but this year, the bean was torn between being excited for her birthday and the party she knew we were planning and knowing that those shots were drawing nearer day by day.

because i'm a big chicken about this kind of stuff, i made sure to schedule the doctor's appointment while MIL was in town.  it also happened to be on a monday so that the old lady could join us, which was extra great since the hub was conveniently off on his fishing trip.  i put off telling the bean about the appointment until i absolutely had to, making sure to wait until her birthday and all of the party festivities were all over.  i didn't want to chance her being all emo and moody during her big weekend, and sure enough, as soon as i told her about it her whole attitude completely changed.  it was sunday evening and i tried to break the news with something positive - "hey, so i'm going to pick you up from school a little early and grandma and your sister will be with me..."

upon hearing the reason for that early pickup though, she burst into tears and immediately started dwelling on how much those shots were going to suck.  we tried to console her and pep talk her, trying to convince her that it was going to be okay and that it wouldn't be as bad as she was imagining it to be.  but we all also knew that the appointment was going to include the tetanus shot, and we all know how much that particular one sucks not just while it's happening but for a few days afterwards. yikes.

when we picked her up from school, she was already freaking out.  oy.  we arrived at the hospital in no time despite having to go to a facility a little further from home than our usual - there weren't any appointments available at that one, and i also wanted her to see a different doctor than her regular one.  her regular doctor is a little rough around the edges, and in the past has talked about the bean's BMI being a little higher than normal and with her entering that tween stage i just didn't want her to hear that crap.  and so we ended up visiting the very hospital she was born in, which she found pretty interesting.

checking in was a quick and easy process, and we sat down to wait for her name to be called.  she, of course, brought her beloved "ducky" for comfort.

the nurse brought us into her station so that she could take the bean's vitals.  she was so scared and frazzled that her blood pressure was through the roof the first time it was taken.

even after taking it a second time the reading was still pretty high, and so the nurse decided to wait a little bit before trying one more time.  she took us into an exam room next, where she handed the bean a hospital gown and had her put it on.  she hasn't worn one of these things in quite a while.

thankfully, the doctor we'd been assigned to was wonderful.  she was friendly and sympathetic to the bean's concerns and tried to make her feel at ease as much as she possibly could.  i really liked her a lot, and we may just start making the drive to baldwin park more regularly for whenever the bean has to see a doctor for anything.  we talked about diet and nutrition and exercise and pre-puberty issues, and after she looked at her ears and throat and all that good stuff, the moment was upon us.  she was due for 3 shots - the T-dap, meningococcal and the first dose of the HPV vaccine.  i know that last one has been a little controversial in the past, but considering the fact that it's protection against what the doctor said are completely preventable forms of caner - well, it was a no-brainer for us.

when the nurse came in with the paraphernalia on a tray and made her first attempt at getting that first shot done - oh, the drama.  my child turned into freaking meryl streep, wailing and crying real tears and carrying on.  MIL, who she'd chosen to be by her side, did her best to talk soothingly into her ear, trying to get her to calm down, while the old lady and i tried to offer encouragement from our perch across the room.  she was being super melodramatic and after awhile it got to be overboard, and the nurse did her best to explain to her exactly how things would go and that as she gripped her arm with one hand, the shot would take about three seconds and then it'd be over with.  the trick was that she couldn't move, which she was really struggling with.  when she tried a couple of times with no success as the bean kept flinching, i finally reached my breaking point and told her that she needed to just relax and get it over with because we weren't leaving the room until it was done.

and after that first shot was finally administered, she calmed down considerably as she realized that it really was, in fact, not as bad as she was imagining it to be.  the nurse managed to get through all three of the shots and we all breathed a sigh of relief to have it over and done with.  she attempted to stand up and said she felt a little woozy, and so we had her lay down again for a few minutes until she felt better again.  another fun fact about the bean:  she despises band-aids.  she absolutely hates having anything stuck to her skin.  that used to be a great way to get the old lady to settle down for her shots - with the promise of fun band-aids with her favorite characters on it.  anyway, as she lay there i took this...for the wedding slideshow, as i told her.  heh.

the nurse took her blood pressure one last time, and finally her numbers were back down to normal.  sheesh.

we sent this to her daddy to show him that it was all done.

and then she was all smiles as we left the hospital.

we asked her if it had really been as bad as she'd thought, and she begrudgingly admitted that it wasn't the most terrible thing ever.  this is good, because we have to go back in six months for the second dose of that HPV vaccine.

god help me.

no shots for you!

so because i am a big ol' chicken shit, i totally made sure to schedule the bean's annual birthday checkup to happen while MIL was in town.  i'm awful when it comes to her getting shots (which i'm sure you already knew), and having her grandma there always comforts and calms her.  and to make it even better, her beloved sister came along too, for moral support.  although she didn't know what was happening that day when we picked her up from school.  when i tried to prep her a couple of weeks prior, she shut me down.  "mommy, i don't want to talk about it."  and so we didn't.

and as if on cue, when we pulled into the parking lot for our local kaiser clinic, she semi-flipped out.  "WHY ARE WE HEEEEEEEEEERE?" came shrieking from the back seat.  MIL did her best to offer some soothing words and a hug, and although she didn't cry (much), we did have to practically pry her out of the car.  if it weren't such a bummer, it'd have been pretty comical.  we must have looked ridiculous to anyone who may have walked by.  luckily, it was at an off time and there was no one around.

she may not have been particularly happy to be there, but changing into the hospital gown ("what IS this thing??") and having a squishy friend to hug lessened the anxiety.  not to mention, hearing that she wouldn't have to endure any needle pokes for another five years finally brought the "hey, kool aid!" grin out.  oh, happy day!

the checkup was quick and easy.  although we yet again had to endure a lecture from the doctor on the bean's weight.  apparently, she's somewhere in the 90s for weight and the 80s for height.  if you ask me, i think the numbers are all bullshit.  while she's not a skinny minnie, she's a healthy kid who's active damn near every day of the week.  and the pattern of her weight and height isn't a new thing.  i could see if she'd gained a boatload of poundage from one visit to the next, but it's all been steady.  ugh.

eye exam.  crushed it.

i'd been prepared to let her skip that afternoon's gymnastics class, thinking there would be tears and agony over a round of immunizations.  but since all was well and we'd even celebrated with an ice cream cone (yeah, i know, shut it), the leotard was on and off she went.

did i mention that she also tested out of both levels of the beginning class and is now in the intermediate 1 group?  oh, yeah.

big things happening for the bean these days, people.  big things!

smoothies suck (apparently)

i'm totally mom of the year material, people.  i kept forgetting to schedule the bean for her 4-year checkup at the doctor's.  um, her birthday was in october.  crap.

because i'm a total wuss, i made the appointment so that the hub would be free to join us.  those doctors always want to stick the poor girl with some type of vaccination, and i'm just not strong enough to handle it.  by that, i mean both physically (because she totally flails around in horror) and mentally.  so we showed up at kaiser bright and early yesterday morning, and while the bean didn't recoil in fear at the sight of the building like she has before, she kept asking "what are they going to do to me, mommy?"  eek.

the first part was easy.  she slid off her sandals and stepped on the scale:

sat down and waited for the nurse.

she wasn't sure of what to make of this business, but watched the nurse and listened carefully as she told her that her arm would get squeezed a little, but wouldn't hurt.

she went right outside and reported to her daddy.  "that black thing squeezed my arm, daddy.  i didn't like it."  i could already see the beginnings of tears forming in her eyes, and dreaded the rest of the appointment.

next was a hearing test, during which she shouted an enthusiastic "YES!" every time she heard the noise through the headphones.

vision test.  i thought it was funny that she called the moon shape a "crescent."  she's such an old lady.

in the exam room, she questioned everything.  "why do i have to get naked?"  "are those puppies on this dress?"  "those sticks, are they lollipops daddy?"  oy.

the actual examination with the doctor was easy peasy.  she checked her lungs, her tummy, eyes, ears, etc.  and then she dropped the bomb:  four immunizations.  all with separate needles.  whooping cough, polio, chicken pox, tetanus.  son of a...

she was predictably upset the nurse explained gently to her that she was going to give her some medicine in her arms.  she looked up at her with the saddest, scaredy-cat eyes and said "but i don't want to have any shots."  the nurse smiled and said "i don't want to give them to you either, but you need them to stay healthy."  and then the hub took her into his arms and i stood behind her to smile and try and keep her spirits up.  at the nurse's "1, 2, 3" her eyes got really big and filled with some serious tears, and she yelped "OW!" as she cried out in pain.

i'd snuck a new toy in my purse, anticipating a possible need for it.  i whipped it out and held it up for her to see, and while it distracted her for a nanosecond, the next "1, 2, 3" killed it.  two more times, and then she was done.  thankfully, the nurse just went bam-bam-bam-bam to get them over with, and while the bean was pissed as hell, she nodded as we explained that the medicine would keep her from getting sick.  but she cried for a little while longer, and the hub and i exchanged helpless glances as we continued to comfort her.

sucks to suck, man.

so, the stats:

height:  42.5"
weight:  48 pounds
BMI: 18.7

the doc said that her BMI was a bit high.  she's above average for height, but also for weight.  and so i got the eyes from the hub as we were told to limit juice (which she doesn't ask for often) and milk (which will be tough, since it's her favorite drink).  a reminder to fill up on fruits and vegetables got me another side-eye from the hub.  agh.

knowing that i need to do some serious rehabbing of our meals, i'm looking for good ways to incorporate the good stuff into each one.  unfortunately, the bean is even pickier than her mother - she won't touch ANY fruits or vegetables.  if she sees them mixed into whatever she's eating, she will take the time to painstakingly remove every bit of greenery before she puts it into her mouth.

i tried making us a smoothie with lunch - which was a pinwheel sandwich with turkey and cheese on whole wheat bread.

she took a sip:

and she was NOT impressed.  she immediately went to work on making me this sign:

and as she handed it to me, she gave me a stern look and said "no smoothies, mommy.  i don't want to drink it.  i don't like the smoothie one bit."

shit.

help.  aside from pureeing the veggies and mixing them in so that they aren't detectable...what do i do?  i need suggestions, people!  please?

staples center forever

i was super excited when i got a text from weezermonkey asking if i was available to go with her to a laker game.  not only did that mean so...
