today's the day

 hi.  please...

and if you somehow missed registering and you live in one of these states, you're in luck - because you can still make it happen.

as for me, i'm going to find joy in as many little things today as i can.  having this in the living room (as of yesterday) will help:

be kind to yourself.  be kind to others.  wear a mask.  and vote.

getting dressed up is always fun

it's been a pretty crazy week, full of all sorts of fun stuff.  first, the bean's cheer team finally unveiled their new uniform for this season, and it is super cute:

they've been gearing up for their first showcase this weekend, which is also team picture day, so the uniforms arrived just in time.  she likes it more than last year's version, and i think i agree with her.  i can't wait to see the teams perform together with them on.

i busted out my favorite voting t-shirt for election day.  the hub was all, "you have a special shirt for voting?" and i was like, "duh...i have a tee for pretty much everything."

i shared a picture on instagram and tagged the local news station, who reposted it a couple of hours later.  heh.

when the old lady got out of work, she took the bean with her to the polls and even let her poke one of the holes in her ballot.  the volunteers at the polling center happily handed her an "i voted" sticker, and she was pretty stoked about it.  we headed off to the mall to run a few errands and grab some dinner afterwards, and for dessert we stopped at the girls' favorite ice cream kiosk.

this month's spirit day at school was "decade day" - you know, like 50s would be poodle skirts and collared shirts, for 60s you could dress as a hippie, 70s would be bell bottoms...you get the picture.  we debated between a few ideas and then ended up settling on something that would be super comfy: 90s grunge.  we picked up a nirvana tee from hot topic, a pair of boot-cut jeans and a stretchy choker necklace, and pulled out my old flannel button-down and the old lady's doc marten boots.

that morning, we rushed through a quickie black nail polish paint job that i promised we'd take off before cheer practice:

and voila:

never mind that she had no idea who nirvana was, and didn't get that true grunge girls didn't smile for pictures.  and while we had her pack an extra pair of shoes for when the ever-so-slightly-too-tight docs got too heavy and uncomfortable, she hung in there and wore them all day long.  such a trooper.

and to cap off the week of dress-up, her cheer team split the girls up into teams for a round of "color wars."  each team wore a color from head to toe - blue, red, yellow or green - and then after a quick practice at the gym they got to play all sorts of fun team bonding-type activities.  i'd hit up party city for all of her gear, including some green temporary hair spray that she was super excited for.  "i never get to color my hair, mom, thanks!"

once she put all of the pieces on, i got her to stop for a second and pose for me.  i thought she looked adorable:

but whyyyyyyyyy does she look so grown-up in that picture?  whyyyyyyyyy?

she's definitely not a baby anymore. well, she'll always be MY baby.  but yeah.  sigh.

it's all fun and games until it becomes reality

i've already whined here about how much i hate election season.  it's all so over the top, so full of insults and hatred and brings out the worst in so many.  and the endless commercials on the radio and on tv...bah.  the entire house was just looking forward to election day so that it could be over and done with, along with the rest of the country.

now, while i was a bazillion percent sure that i didn't want to vote for the republican candidate, i'd spent a lot of time wrestling with my thoughts about hillary clinton.  but then i thought back to months ago when i'd visited isidewith.com, which guided me through a series of questions and showed me that she was the candidate whose views most aligned with my own.  and so i embraced her as my choice, read posts on the pantsuit nation facebook page, let myself get a little caught up in the excitement and anticipation.

i woke up yesterday full of hope.  i was a little anxious but excited for what the day would bring, and of course my first stop of the day was barre class.

back at home, while the bean got ready for school, the rest of us gathered around the table to go over our sample ballots and talk about the various measures and propositions.  we had an extra one, and the bean decided to join in and fill in some bubbles.

the hub was the first to head to the polls on his way to work.  he reported that there were no lines and zero wait - which is what i'd expected, in our sleepy little suburb.

although we live in the same house, all three of us have different polling locations.  it's so weird.  the old lady went to the elementary school around the corner, while i headed to a local fire station to cast my vote.

it was nice to do our thing without having to wait in any crazy lines, but it was the middle of the day and again...sleepy suburb.  done, done and done.

with the hub out for the evening at the laker game, the old lady and i picked up some snacks and supplies to make some pink champagne cocktails.  now you know neither of us is much of a drinker, so don't make fun of what we popped open:

at least it didn't come in a box, amirite??

later, we tucked the bean in bed, we sat down in the living room and finally turned the tv on.  we'd been watching election coverage on twitter, with the anxiety growing as the results started coming in. i tried to tell myself that it was going to be fine, despite the fact that the republican had taken an early lead.  after all, there were a lot of states still to account for and tons of votes to be tallied.  right?

well, you know what happened.  as hard as it is to believe, this candidate who not only admitted to but bragged about sexually assaulting women, who is openly racist and hateful, and is endorsed by none other than the KKK is officially the president-elect of our country.  more than half of the people in the united states chose to vote for this man, even though his entire campaign has seemed like the biggest joke that was never actually funny at all.  it's just all mind-boggling, and incredible in the worst way possible.

but this morning, as we're faced with the reality of last night's events, i'm trying my damnedest to put a positive spin on my thoughts.  it's so much easier to let ourselves be frightened, be worried, consider this a nightmare come true.  but i have to believe that everything will be all right.  it has to.  i remember that there have been previous leaders who made lots of promises and statements and pledged to do things that never actually came to fruition.  i think of all the hope and promise and love that so many people expressed through the last few months, and realize that one man cannot break all of that down.  there are a lot of hoops for him to jump through before a lot of his more outrageous statements can become reality, and there are even more good people with good intentions who will fight for what is right.  and i have to believe that there is some good in this man somewhere.  while i couldn't bring myself to watch his victory speech last night, i read parts of it - and all i can do is hope that he truly does want to do what he can to unite the country rather than incite its citizens to turn on each other even more than they already have.

tomorrow has come.  the sun is shining, the world is turning.  it's a new day, and as terrible as yesterday was, it's all on us to make it a great one.  after all..."when they go low, we go high."  let's focus on that.

proud to be an american

it seems appropriate to recap election day at the house of wan on a day we set aside to honor all who have served in the military.  we owe so much to those folks who make so many sacrifices to protect us and our country, and for that, we thank you.

the bean's school managed to commemorate the day by designating it as "red, white & blue day."  no political endorsements, just a day to be patriotic and celebrate an occasion that only comes once every four years.  and of course, i wanted her to have something appropriate to wear.  duh.

so about a year ago, i sewed up a super cute skirt that i still have never been able to wear.  well, actually, i attempted to wear it out to dinner one day with a blue top, and the hub told me i looked like an american flag.  hmph.  anyway, i knew i had some leftover material that could possibly be just enough to throw together something for the bean.  and because i've pretty much got the simple skirt down, i was able to crank it out in about half an hour.

she totally cracked me up when i had her try it on and she said it was her "bacon skirt."  look, she even stretched her arms out to make herself look like a strip of porky goodness.

as soon as she disappeared from sight, off to another day of learning and fun with her class, i headed to my polling place to do my thang.

i actually came prepared:

despite a minor snafu with my address (which they still had listed from two homes ago, despite my current mailbox being full of political mumbo-jumbo on a daily basis), i was in and out of there in mere minutes.

i was apparently still on a voting high when i got home.

and, check this out.  what a difference four years makes!  back in 2008:

and now.

pretty awesome, huh?

the very best kind of march madness

march was actually a pretty fun-filled month, now that i look back at it.  let’s get into it: the hub and i snuck out for a day date, drivin...
